Pull - Chapter One (Sequel to Push)

Pairing: Jack/Ennis
Genre: AU
Title: Pull ~ sequel to Push (Pull should be three or four chapters all together)
Synopsis: One shot on what could have happened if Bobby had a little talk with his dad. This takes place after Ennis and Jack’s last time together.
Warnings: R
Disclaimer: Ennis, Jack and any other characters from the OS belong to the great Annie Proulx. I just can’t leave them alone.

A/N: All right, I know how to admit defeat. A few weeks ago I posted what was supposed to be a simple one-shot (quit laughing Joanne!) and I was all prepared to say to anyone who asked for more, “No, sorry, this is it. There won’t be any other chapters.” However, when folks started asking for Ennis’ POV on all the happenings of Pull, Ennis immediately started telling me exactly what he thought about all of it (and Joanne did her I told you so dance).

For those that want more Meant to Be, I promise you I’m trying, but my life has some strangeness going on and I have to devote a lot of time to it. Also, writing this is easier for me at the moment. I’m kinda in the same place as Ennis right now. Please know that I treasure each and every comment from you guys and I deeply apologize if I’m not being able to answer them.

A very special thanks to Joanne, [info]bagel, for being the beta for this one. I also want to give a big thank you and a credit to [info]bbmbottomboy and her story Looking Back for some inspiration (regarding wounded bird syndrome) and, of course, Sienna was the first one to ask about Ennis’ POV.

Thatcher dead!

Cos I am spaminating this evening, this news story is quite hilarious.

A misconstrued text message announcing the passing of a beloved pet has sparked a flurry of diplomatic activity in Canada.

Transport Minister John Baird sent a message reading: "Thatcher has died".

Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper was soon informed that 84-year-old former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had passed away.

But it was actually Mr Baird's beloved cat, named after his political heroine, who had died.

The BBC helpfully provides photo references for which Thatcher it is, and is not. Ahahaha.

more in geek culture not actually being a patriarchy-free world unto itself

Prompted by a post by someone on my flist, though not unique to her experiences, I just feel the need to spell something out in short words that I may not have announced generally before:

If anyone of my acquaintance ever attempts to justify, or minimise the hurt/alienation caused by, patronising or race/gender/etcfailing or mansplainy behaviour with "we geeks just aren't good with social skills!", I will...well, I was going to employ colourful language related to decapitation, but actually I would probably be quietly disappointed and trust them that little bit less as someone I could talk to.

Social skills can be terrifying and confusing, something I am aware of from the limited standpoint of a neurotypical person with anxiety disorders and, well, a geek. I do not wish to minimise the social difficulties caused by, for example, autistic-spectrum conditions; they are something I am honestly undereducated about and will not attempt to comment on. Regardless of the various and valid reasons one may find social interaction difficult, there is a difference between having social skills and a social conscience. I firmly believe it is possible to stutter a lot and hide in a corner and still actively work on not making people feel like shit; it's something I aim for, though of course I am human and fall short at times. Rules can be hard and upsetting, but you know? Making a decision not to try and learn them or adjust your behaviour, or even make an honest and not fauxpologetic apology, safe in the knowledge that the universe will bend itself around you, well, it starts with a p and rhymes with 'spivilege'.

It's not the confusing artificial social rules that make you stare all evening at the tits of the only woman talking, or not talk to the African-American hostess of a fandom party once, or complain loudly in a mixed setting about all the fangirls who only got into Tolkien through the pretty films, or ask a woman you just met whether she's considered wearing a gold bikini to the next meeting*. That's just you.

(Oh yes! And also, women? Also 'we geeks'!)

Seriously. Just don't do it. This is mostly being written down here as a personal reference for what to say the next time it does happen in my presence, which will not be the first, or the fifth.

* Three out of four of those are drawn from my experience. Guess which!

Also in PlayStation Home's theatre (PS3 movie room.)

Also..Apparently..Leona Lewis is singing the theme song for FFXIII. Not too sure how I feel about that.

Anyway, share your reactions. I'm mostly curious to see whateverone thinks of a mainstream music artist being put in the game.

Also, Aaron Carter terrifies me.

And Bruno is even more of a twat in America than he is here. o.O How is that even possible?

Er, I don't actually watch this show, I'm waiting for a film to come on, but I'm getting well into it. XD

the below totally not aimed at soupytwist omg.

Comrades!

I have noted a POPULAR MISCONCEPTION or CONFUSION arising among some individuals of my acquaintance, regarding the proper nomenclature of East Anglian low-lying wetlands. It is my pleasure to clear this matter up for you!

The network of rivers and lakes, left as an artefact of Roman to medieval peat mining, found in NORFOLK (and also SUFFOLK but we mostly ignore them) are known as BROADS. The mostly-natural wetlands bearing a passing resemblence to marshes and found chiefly in CAMBRIDGESHIRE and LINCOLNSHIRE are known as FENS. This is a VERY IMPORTANT DISTINCTION. For example you will note that the local radio station was until some years ago called RADIO BROADLAND, whereas the University of Cambridge (est 1209) is properly referred to as FENLAND POLY. The Fens DO extend into the western edge of Norfolk (n.b. not where I am from), but they are BY NO MEANS the predominant geographical feature of the county.

Fens are considerably more misty and atmospheric, if you like that sort of thing, and much more predominant in fiction, but CRUCIALLY, you cannot spend an afternoon on them pissing around in a dinghy, and therefore they are AUTOMATICALLY INFERIOR. Also, they're basically marshes. Seriously. Marshes.

HERE ENDETH THE LESSON.

360 update - thanks guys!

Just thought I'd post here rather than reply to you all individually! I'll shell out for the Elite, I probably would have regretted getting an 'inferior' model anyway, and with the Christmas sales I'm sure it'll be more than worth it. I completely forgot about the whole 'burn the game onto the hd' thing.

Does anyone have any game recs? So far my list includes only Saints Row, GTA4 (I have it on my PC but it doesn't wanna work AT ALL), Fallout 3 (again, my PC isn't happy about that), and... the Orange Box. Just so I can play it and be thankful my PC can at least handle TF2. ;)

I'm COMPLETELY new to the Xbox scene! The original Xbox is the only "next gen" (then gen?) console I didn't own so I have no idea what titles are meant to be awesome or not. I keep seeing games I quite like the look of and then forgetting all about them because, hey, I don't have an xbox. :P

What bunch of hypocrites...

http://blogs.usatoday.com/gameon/2009/11/new-mexico-womens-soccer-player-elizabeth-lambert-suspended-for-physical-play-vs-byu.html

All the excessive media reports on this woman has made me feeling very angry, appalled, insulted, and aggravated with what is still considered to be a taboo gesture of a specific individual because of her gender. (How dare America dictate to anybody on how to run their sovereign nation when we can't even run our own without a little bit of bigotry, sexism, and marginalization of specific groups of people because they do not allow themselves to be conformed to a biased, discriminatory, despicable patriarchal, society which sometimes places themselves on a moral pedestal when another country happens to do the same thing albeit in a more blatant way.)

So a soccer player gets physical with a member of that soccer player's opposing team, alert the Newspapers and the firing-squad because she happens to be a *gasps*..wait for it... wait for it... a woman!

Guess all the animals are gonna be masturbating and salivating tonight, and the sad thing is, nobody sees anything at all wrong with this picture. Its a very sad thing.

Xbox 360 advice!

Hi guys
I'm THIS CLOSE to buying (or asking Santa for) an XBox 360 and I'm a little confused by the options available to me. I've been very tempted to shell out for an Elite but... is it worth it?

My Xbox would be in the same room as my internet/PC/DVD/TV (entertainment hub, basically), and all I'd use it for is GAMING (and maybe the occassional hd movie). Should I just get the middle option (the 'premium'?) - 20 or 60GB hard drive?

I get the impression the Elite is good for major downloadable content but ...why would I ever need more than 60 (or even 20) gigs for a few games and additional content? keep in mind I'm in the UK, if that changes anything.

Thanks for any imput!

Hi all, need help.

Do anyone knows of anyone that wants to buy the old Xbox console for $85? or anywhere besides Ebay to sale it.

It still has the sticker on the front buttons 2 controllers, I was giving it by a friend and hardly used it since I had more PS2 games. and can someone recommend a good shipping or should I have the shipping with the price above? and is the price above fair?.

Sorry for the strange post I am just in need to sale this since I already got rid of my PS2, in need of cash bad and selling my things is the only way I can see doing it, do not know where to sale the Xbox.

Thanks.

Edit:

Selling Original Xbox with 2 controllers, works great for only $35 or $40 will ship by media mail with shipping number if asked for one shipping is in price if you want me to, do not mind .

So if anyone know of or wants to buy this Xbox please do tell me PayPal payment only.

Was that a better post?

"What on earth did nerds do in the 1980s to figure this all out?"

I'm way late to the party on this, but I just started reading Spook Country this week. Unlike most Gibson books I've read, it doesn't ramp up slowly, and instead hits the ground running (that's not a bad thing). I'm only 30 pages in (it's been a busy week without a lot of time to read) but I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it; I can easily connect to the tone, the characters, the setting, and the storytelling style he uses.

When I logged into Goodreads this morning to put it on my bookshelf, I saw that people had Memories of the Future on their lists, and a few readers had reviewed it (overall, they seem to like it, which pleases me.) One of the readers mentioned that my book was recommended to her by a blog called Stacked. I took at look, and here's what I found:

Christina [Stacked's editor] is watching the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation for the first time ever and reviewing episodes in conjunction with Wil Wheaton's book Memories of the Future.

Christina calls the project Amnesia of the Future, which I just love because it's clever, and I enjoy clever things, as you may already know. I've just read the posts she's done so far (she's up to Code of Honor), and I really enjoyed them. Allow me to share some highlights:

Farpoint

Episode: If someone were to tell me that in a few hundred years humans will regularly be traveling vast swaths of space and encountering other intelligent life forms, I would not at all be surprised to find giant. space. jellyfish included amongst the aliens. Actually, I think it’s kind of cool and in my next life would like to come back as one.

MotF: Post entertaining recap of the episodes, was the “Behind the Scenes Memory” which brings a rather cool dimension to the show. Despite the faults Wil Wheaton points out about the two part episode, they were obviously doing something right. I didn’t notice the repetition of background actors during the mall scene and, even after having it pointed out, re-watched the episode and still missed them despite telling myself “Hey, self, look out for the repeat actors!”

The Naked Now

Episode: ...the assistant engineer is acting like a five-year-old attempting to master Jenga and Wesley Crusher is speaking way to coherently for a drunken fourteen-year-old. In fact, he doesn’t seem much different from the previous episode’s overly-exuberant puppynerd self. Shouldn’t a normal drunk teenager be slurring and trying to get laid?

Dear Wesley, I hope you enjoy being a virgin for the rest of your life. You might want to start stocking up on pocket protectors now.

MotF: I’m so smart! Wil Wheaton also feels that this episode came too soon.  I definitely think that moving it back to a later spot in the season would have been a wise move and an opportunity to play with the repressed desires of the characters that would be bound to come out when intoxicated.

Code of Honor

Episode: Ultimately, the episode was just as hokey for me as The Naked Now. I appreciate the analogy and moral questions raised and the set-up for what happens rolls out very nicely. But where is the Jell-O? If you’re going to have juvenile boy-thoughts about a girl fight, shouldn’t they be in bikinis and Jell-O?  Give them such “advanced” weaponry and have them fight on the set of Flashdance, but Tasha gets to remain in her uniform with her communicator on?  At least Yarinna got to wear a pink lamé bodysuit and come out like the reigning champion.

MotF: Really Wil Wheaton? Pillow fight was as good as you could come up with? Were you afraid of trademark issue in mentioning Jell-O? Because Jell-O fight trumps pillow fight any day. At least you had the Beavis and Butthead running joke. I found that to be infantile and pointless at first, but you pulled it off nicely.

Now I kind of can't wait for her next bout of amnesia (cue the All My Circuits theme) because it's interesting and entertaining to read the first-time impressions of a new TNG viewer 22 years after we made the show, especially when that viewer is reviewing my book in tandem with the episodes. It's just so delightfully meta, I couldn't not link to it. I'll be interested to see if she gets the same facepalm fatigue I started to get, and when it arrives if she does.

Speaking of Memories of the Future, I thought some of you may like to know that work has begun on Volume Two; Angel One is ready to go beneath Andrew's Red Pen of Doom.

A VERY SEKRIT PASSPHRASE

posted by Neil
There were 38 independent bookshops around the land who had Graveyard Book parties. The people at Harpers somehow got it down to 11, and they sent them to me to judge the winner. The winner gets me for a signing in December. I watched the 11 videos/descriptions/ photos. I watched them again. I watched them yet again, this time with Lorraine, my assistant, watching too and saying helpful things like, "They are all so good. Whoo. Don't know how you'll make a decision. Look at that! They're line dancing to Monster Mash! And that Death is on stilts, isn't he. Is that a horse? A horse in a store? These are amazing." The fourth time, Woodsman Hans wandered in from the deep woods (where he is making a pond) and watched them too.

Then I made my decision. I called Elyse Marshall at Harpers and told her. "Ah," she said. "I'll have to check with the lawyers to find out if you can do that."

So we wait.

...

I posted the Amanda Palmer current East Coast tour dates here last night. http://www.amandapalmer.net/afp/upcoming-shows for venues and details.

Today it occurred to me that in the past when I've had friends on tour, I've often done special "Neil sent me" things, where people who come from this blog get some special free thing, which a) is nice for the people who get the free thing and b) tells the person on tour that people are really coming from the blog. I did it with Thea Gilmore (who is starting a new UK tour next week. People in the UK, go and see live Thea Gilmore, for she is wonderful: http://www.theagilmore.net for dates and venues.) I've done it for The Magnetic Fields, who, incidentally, have a new album coming out on Jan 26th. And then there's the Green Goddess restaurant in New Orleans, where you can mention the "Mezze of Destruction" to tell them you came from here and get sent something wonderful to eat or drink. (It changes, depending on what chef Chris DeBarr feels like making.)

I should do it for Amanda. I called her up and told her.

She called me back. "Beth and I have put our heads together and come up with a code phrase for people from your blog," she said. "So they say it and get a special free thing from the merch table."

"Fire away," I said.

"We think they should come over to the merch table and point to this poster...

...and say 'That chick in the yellow corset crowdsurfing looks kind of hot. I wonder if she's dating anyone?' And then they get something for free."

I said I thought that was a very bad idea, because people might say that anyway, and it was an awful lot for people to remember. And what if they sold out of that poster early that night?

I said, "What about any variant of 'Neil sent me from his blog?'"

"Absolutely not," she said. "That's boring."

I told her to leave it with me.

And then I stared at this screen glumly, with nothing happening in my head, and real work I should be doing starting to nip at my heels. So I turned to the Oracular Orb of truth at http://www.neilgaiman.com/oracle/ and I clicked on the orb and shook it.

Here is Doug Jones and some strange man it said.

If you go to one of Amanda Palmer's shows on this tour, wander over to the Merch table, and say that you found about it from some strange man's blog. And something good will probably happen. (If they just stare at you, tell them it was me, and this blog. If they keep staring tell them that the chick in the yellow corset in the poster looks like she probably has a really nice boyfriend.)

....

This seemed like a very good cause to me:

Hi Neil,

I am a long-time fan, and have even met you backstage at a Tori show (though that was many years ago!). I am writing to ask a bit of a favor.

About 10 years ago, I appeared on 20/20 with Tori, speaking about sexual violence. Since then, I've stayed close with Tori whose been a mentor of the best kind. I also started a nonprofit, Pandora's Project, that provides support, information, and resources to rape and sexual abuse survivors and their supporters. We operate Pandora's Aquarium, an online support group with more than 20,000 registered members.

Recently, I was named a 2009 L'Oreal Woman of Worth for my volunteer work with Pandora's. I was chosen for this honor from more than 2,500 applicants.

Now, one of the ten 2009 Honorees will be selected as the national honoree through a public online vote. Her cause will get an additional $25,000, and a lot of media exposure. This is the first time L'Oreal has recognized a sexual violence organization, and becoming the national honoree would allow me to shine a spotlight on this issue that affects so many women and women.

Voting is easy - people just need to go to the url below, enter their email address in the box on the right, and click the "submit vote" button. Each email address is allowed one vote, and voting ends November 24.

http://www.womenofworth.com/Honorees/Honoree2009Detail.aspx?nomid=5657c940-425b-47a2-879d-ed3c2d82b56f

I am wondering if you might be willing to send people to this voting link via your (infinitely popular) twitter or blog. I understand if it's not something you can do, but my experience running a small-budget nonprofit tells me it's always wise to ask!

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Shannon Lambert

I'll plug it happily.

Your correspondent asks "Will you be reading the original version where the wolf actually is killed, and not the 'oh my goodness our kids can't hear about death' version in which they bring him to the zoo?"

I fear she's in error; in the original version, written by Prokofiev, Peter snares the wolf, then convinces the hunters NOT to kill it, but to take it to the zoo.

I've been researching, and that's what I found out too. Wikipedia has a list of changes made in various versions of the story (Disney, for example, had the wolf not eat the duck). But the wolf was always taken to the zoo...

Pocket-Sized For His Pleasure...

Before I get to the fun stuff, I cannot state enough what a pain in the ass expense reports are. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that expense reports, while necessary, are evil.

And speaking of Things Wot Irritate Me, I was talking earlier with [info]afra_schatz and [info]giselleslash (as you do) about the hilarity of how fandom determines masculinity in fanfic. By which I mean, automatically Older/Taller/More Muscular Men get to top over their Shorter/Younger/Prettier brethren. Which is why Orlando never gets to top unless it's Elijah or Dom and why Jensen never gets to top, um, ever, I don't think, since Jared's taller & Misha's older. Clearly the CW RPS fandom needs to introduce someone shorter and/or younger for Jensen. Or course, this theory also proves why Eric Bana & Jeffrey Dean Morgan always top, both being taller and/or older, although now I wonder who would win that contest if they were to ever meet in a fic. I mean, would they flip a coin or would Jeff win simply because older trumps taller in the masculinity scale of fanfic? Although, that's not really true, given that Jared (back when I read J2, so someone correct me if I'm wrong) always topped Jensen, even though Jensen is older.

I still say Eric & Jeff would have to flip a coin.

(Yes, these are the things I ponder while doing expense reports. I told you they were evil. The expense reports, I mean. Not my thoughts. Just so we're clear. Um, yeah.)

Anyway, the point is, it led to a really amusing discussion of the fact that Orlando is, in fact, just as muscular, if not more so, than both Bean AND Viggo and is, in fact, the same height as both of them. I think what this really means is that the world needs more fics where Jensen & Orlando top.

In other news, I met with Trace last night for dinner & to see The Men Who Stare At Goats, which was a really great anti-war commentary, in addition to being a really hilarious black comedy. Quite the perfect film for Veteran's Day. And it also re-established my love for Ewan McGregor, who'd sort of disappeared for me over the last couple of years. Not to mention, there's this long-running Jedi joke that never got old. *g* Definitely recommended.

And, after I got home, I watched the latest Sons of Anarcy, and OH. MY. GOD. Spoilers for 2.10 )

And tonight, I'm meeting with [info]sabrinagb to see Boondock Saints II again, then I'll head home to watch SPN from between my fingers, because I still can't see any way this is going to be a good episode.

Hatin' on Fox

Who here is a Fox News defender? Anyone? Because I know the Daily Show is not a real news show and stuff, but, this right here is ridiculous.

And it's one of the many reasons I hate Fox News.

Am I missing a large chunk of the story here? Where are your ethics, Fox? Where are they?

"I have a very sexy learning disability. What do I call it, Kif?" "*sigh* Sexlexia."

Hooray, I have some work at a local hospital via temp agency! For £9 an hour, which is a good £50 a week less than I was getting after tax before, but is still Not Bad; I didn't want to mention it before in case it fell through, but I am starting tomorrow and even have an ID card in which I do not look totally fugly.

Listless and unexcitable as I am feeling at present (which poss has something to do with the fact that I can't figure out how to turn the radiator in my room off and keep dozing off), it will probably do me good to do something apart from read and watch DS9* and Futurama***. And it does take the pressure off to find a permanent job Right Away, so I can try and focus on possible Masters stuff.

* Jacob and I have almost finished watching s3. Filled with love. This is not an invitation for the irksome people who divert every conversation onto one about how DS9 is the best trek AD NAUSEUM to descend upon my journal to go I TOLD YOU SO, cos seriously. Stay in your corner with the people who won't shut up about Linux.**

** Wow, how much of my flist/rlist did I just alienate. The above totally does not apply to people who want to flap with me about a) Kira and her face b) Odo and his face c) Bashir and O'Brien singing Jerusalem together d) pretty much every episode where two characters have an awkward moment of not quite expressing affection for each other or e) Ferengi.

*** I may title my DW/LJ entries from now until the END OF TIME with Zapp Brannigan quotes, is that okay? Okay.
